SA’s Live Marine Diatoms – Phaeodactylum tricornutum

SA’s Diatoms:
Phaeodactylum tricornutum is a motile maine diatom. Diatoms are found in marine and freshwater habitats and are responsible for about 20% of global primary productivity! Diatoms use silicon dioxide to build cell walls called frustules. The frustules of Phaeodactylum can be variable, resulting in a diversity of cell shapes. The SA’s Diatom strain (UTEX 646) was isolated from the small island of Segelskär in the Gulf of Finland. It is known to store large reserves of lipids (20-30% of dry cell weight)

SA’s Advantage:
SA’s Diatoms are maintained in clean, single-species cultures grown from starter stock maintained in a cleanroom and grown using aseptic techniques, ensuring that you are getting the best phytoplankton available!

Use:
Phaeodactylum is an important species for shellfish and shrimp hatcheries due to its favorable nutritional profile. Shellfish such as oysters, clams, mussels, and scallops benefit greatly from feeding on Phaeodactylum.

Feeding and Culture:
Shake well before using. For reef aquariums, feeding at least every other day is recommended. Feed approximately 3oz/100ml per 100 gallons, or 2tsp/10ml per 10 gallons. SA’s Diatoms can be used as a starter for culturing Phaeodactylum.
