Here is our exceptional wild caught breeding pair of the "onyx" color form of Amphiprion percula. These are the parents of our exclusive "S.A. Onyx" variety. Color development requires about 18 months. The young pairs pictured in our catalog should achieve full coloration after a few months in your aquarium.
The pair shown were collected in the Solomon Islands and purchased by an aquarist in Michigan. This hobbyist kept them for several years before selling them to a hobbyist breeder in Maryland in 2003. In June of 2006, Sustainable Aquatics acquired the pair. They resumed spawning in our tank only a few weeks later.
The pair typically spawns every 10-14 days, and the nests hatch about a week after they are deposited. We are able to rear several hundred juvenile fish from each nest. The adult coloration of these fish includes jet-black markings between the three white stripes, while the fins are trimmed in orange. The juvenile fish take longer than A. ocellaris clownfish and even other A. percula clownfish to develop their stripes. It can take over a year and a half to develop the dark black coloration between the bars.
