Canary Blenny

  • Species Information
  • Scientific Name:Meiacanthus oualanensis
  • Family:Blenniidae
  • Origin:Captive Bred
  • Temperament:Semi-aggressive
  • Maximum Size:3.9"
  • Ideal Tank Size:>30 Gallons

Physical Description– This tank-bred canary blenny will add a splash of bright color to a reef or fish-only saltwater aquarium of 30 gallons or more. One of the more popular fang blennies owing largely to its color and striking lyretail, the canary blenny also goes by the common names canary fang blenny and oualan forktail blenny. It is a small (to 3.9 in/10 cm), bold fish belonging to a group of fishes commonly called saber-toothed blennies. While some saber-toothed blennies are poor aquarium choices appropriate only in a species-specific system, the canary blenny is a great aquarium fish.

Temperament– While these fish do possess fangs, they use them primarily for defense and should not pose a serious danger to most other fishes, invertebrates or the aquarist. The canary blenny may prove antagonistic, however, to other fishes similar in shape, size and color. Only one canary blenny should be housed in an aquarium, unless the system is very large or the aquarist is experienced enough to provide the appropriate husbandry.

Size– 3.9″ Maximum

Diet– Like all blennies from the genus Meiacanthus, this blenny is a planktivore and benefits from a varied diet with plenty of meaty options offered two or three times per day. While a mature aquarium with plenty of live rock will provide natural feeding opportunities, all Sustainable Aquatics tank-bred fishes are weaned onto captive dry foods such as the Sustainable Aquatics Dry Hatchery Diet.
